Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) has finally leaped from the cliff known as the extreme left, plunging into the deep dark abyss of the lunatic fringe of the Democratic party. He joins such respected public figures as Michael Moore, Jane Fonda, Sean Penn, Al Franken, and Janeane Garofolo. What great company to be in, huh? What spurned this distinction was his remarks made on the floor of the US Senate this week, where he referred to the American troops guarding detainees at Guantanamo Bay as "Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others . . ." Can I sign the Senator up for a CT Scan now or do I have to wait until he actually walks into the Senate chamber wearing a tin foil hat?
The report that Durbin cited in making these comments was that of an FBI agent. He quoted as follows:
On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18-24 hours or more. On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. . . . On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.
Are you kidding me? Excuse me Senator, if I fail to equate uncomfortable temperatures in a cell and the blasting of 50 Cent's new record with the genetic experiments of the Nazis and forced labor in monstrous conditions of the Soviets. There is absolutely NO grounds for comparisons. What is even more shocking is that these charges are not coming from some wacko hippie on Daily Kos or some underground activist on Americablog. Rather, it is coming from the second ranking Democrat in the US Senate!
Sen. Durbin and his minions have been harping the past few weeks about how conditions at Gitmo and the abuses at Abu Gharib have made America less safe. They contend that America's indiscretions are leading to Muslims becoming angrier with us and thus, allowing terrorists to recruit and seek comfort more easily. I disagree. It is not the troops actions which are spurning the terrorists to fight on, it is comments from Americans like Dick Durbin that are. For every liberal who stands up on television and calls the Bush Administration "Nazis" or refers to our troops as "thugs", the terrorists become bolder. Hell, Durbin's comments were cited on Al_Jazeera's website as a validation of their anti-America propaganda campaign. If a broadcasting company is licking their lips in anticipation of a backlash, just imagine what Osama Bin Laden is feeling.
Figures like Sen. Durbin are entitled to their viewpoints, no matter how crack-potted they are. I would just request that a senior United States official, such as a Senator, choose his words wisely, and not allow his comments to aid and comfort those who wish to harm Americans. That is what Dick Durbin has done here. He, not the troops, have given the terrorists more ammunition against us. Somewhere around the world, an American will die at the hands of a terrorist, and the senior Senator from Illinois might just have had a hand in motivating it.
